Lockdown creativity

The Nightshelter is excited to be collaborating with local macramé expert and owner of Twome, Isabella Strambio on a creative lockdown project.

Last year, the Nightshelter made and sold macramé guardian angels at Winchester Christmas Market. The sale of each angel covered the cost of a bed for the night at the Nightshelter. The angels were extremely popular and sold out within an hour.

Isabella (pictured left) has used her talents to create a video guide to making the macramé angels so that people can use their time in lockdown to do something positive from their homes to help people experiencing homelessness.

“I am a big believer that craft helps people with mental health like anxiety,” explained Isabella. “In the past few weeks many people have written to thank me for introducing them to macramé as it has helped them in isolation.

“I am always keen to work with local charities and to support the community. I immediately loved the idea of asking my community of makers and followers to get involved in this project. People at home can benefit from using macramé to create a guardian angel whilst helping vulnerable people and homelessness.”

Isabella was an interior designer in London before turning her hand to macramé and setting up Twome. She now delivers classes online and holds regular workshops in the Winchester area and has been featured in The Sunday Telegraph and appeared on Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas. Isabella’s video does a great job of showing what you need and how to make a macramé guardian angel. How many you make is up to you but each one will be sold to cover the cost of a bed at the Nightshelter for one night for one person.
