To celebrate A Taste of Winchester food festival (22nd June-5th July 2026) we are releasing three of our most popular recipes.
We use donated food and careful budgeting to serve nutritious meals every evening to our residents. Usually prepared by our amazing volunteers, we cook up over 3,500 evening meals every year.
Sitting together and sharing a meal helps residents to feel a sense of belonging during their stay at The Winchester Beacon.
Hils, our Catering Co-ordinator explains the significance that a good meal can have:
“Many of our residents arrive having not eaten a proper meal in a long time. Whether they have been sofa surfing, sleeping in their car or rough sleeping eating has often become about grabbing what they can when they can.
During their stay with us, food becomes something to sit and savour again. Our home-cooked food can be a huge source of comfort and hope. It sends a message that they are now safe and that things are going to get better.”
The three chosen recipes being released to mark A Taste of Winchester are Pineapple Upside Down Pudding, Corn Fritters and Jambalaya. All three recipes are relatively simple to make, use lots of store cupboard ingredients and are budget friendly but delicious.
A Taste of Winchester food festival is an exciting opportunity to experience local culinary talent. Restaurants, cafés, pubs, retailers, producers, and are coming together to present a diverse array of events, tastings, special menus, and local and global flavours.
