Over 120 supporters of The Winchester Beacon and members of the local community came together at The Arc in Winchester on Thursday 10th October to mark World Homeless Day and hear how the charity supports people facing with homelessness.
In April 2023-March 2024, The Winchester Beacon accommodated and supported 53 people. On the night, these people were represented on stage by 53 footprints with the audience encouraged to recognise the residents as the heroes of their own stories.
During the evening, Mark Wakeling, the Chief Executive of The Winchester Beacon, thanked supporters and reflected on his first nine months in the role.
After the event, Mark commented: “We are really encouraged to see so many people here this evening. I have spent the last few months reaching out to our community and stakeholders as part of our strategy review, it is great to now see so many of those people here in one room. This evening is an opportunity for us to share with our supporters the difference that we have made together to the lives of our residents.”
Professor Nick Maguire, from the Centre for Homelessness Research and Practice, was the guest speaker at the event. He focused on the qualities and strategies we need when supporting people faced with homelessness.
