We are fortunate to have over 100 volunteers who give their time and skills to The Winchester Beacon. Our volunteers help out alongside our staff to keep things running smoothly at The Winchester Beacon. Nicci, our Volunteers Administrator, leads on the recruitment, training and co-ordination of volunteers.
What does your role involve?
My focus is on our volunteers. I meet with new volunteers interested in coming on board. I train new and current volunteers and work alongside staff to ensure our volunteers know that they are valued and a key part of our service.
Do you have a background in the charity sector?
I have volunteered over the years at lots of different organisations but this is my first role working in a charity. Before working at The Winchester Beacon, I was a primary school teacher for almost 30 years. I was looking for a change and saw the role at The Winchester Beacon.
What do you enjoy about working at The Winchester Beacon?
I enjoy the people. I am always inspired by the residents’ situations and their resilience. The generosity of heart of the volunteers willing to join us and give their time. I enjoy helping volunteers to discover if this is the right place for them.
What motivates you?
Working as part of an inspirational team of people with phenomenal skills and experience. Seeing the change for individuals from when they come in compared to when they move on.
How would you describe what The Winchester Beacon does?
The Winchester Beacon is best at working with people to improve their current situation. It has a heart as well as professional expertise to support the people that it encounters.
What has working at The Winchester Beacon taught you?
It has been a learning curve, I have learnt and discovered things about people experiencing homelessness and the myriad of elements surrounding the situation they find themselves in and the challenges that they face.
