We are excited to announce that The Thomas Weelkes Singers will be hosting a recital in aid of The Winchester Beacon on Sunday 12th October, 7pm at the Church of St Cross, Winchester.

The Thomas Weelkes Singers, described by the Hampshire Chronicle as ‘exceptional’, were formed in 2012 with a membership drawn from throughout the south of England and a mission to support local charities through concert-giving.

Christopher Tolley, conductor of the choir, says:

“Some of us know The Beacon well as volunteers, and we are proud of its inspirational work with people experiencing homelessness.  At this time of funding cuts and budget squeezes it is vital to keep up that work.  And what better time to sing about it than just after World Homeless Day?”

The first part of the St Cross concert comprises Renaissance masterpieces by Palestrina, Guerrero and Hassler, ideally suited to the gloriously resonant acoustic of St Cross.  After the interval, there is music by Winchester composers Raymond Humphrey and Francis Pott, as well as John Tavener’s ‘The Lamb’ and Caroline Shaw’s haunting psalm setting ‘and the swallow’.

Mark Eden, of the Eden Stell Guitar Duo and tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, joins the Thomas Weelkes Singers to provide popular instrumental interludes by the lutenist John Dowland and the Spanish romantic Moreno Torroba.

No booking required. Free admission, retiring collection (suggested minimum £15) in aid of The Winchester Beacon.
