On Tuesday 3rd June, we were honoured to welcome the High Sheriff of Hampshire, Sue Elton, to The Winchester Beacon.
Sue is no stranger to our work—around 15 years ago, she generously volunteered as a cook with us. Her return visit brought a deep appreciation of the essential support we provide to individuals facing homelessness in Winchester and surrounding areas.
During her visit to our main site on Jewry Street, Sue toured the facilities and spoke with staff about the personalised support and life-changing opportunities we offer our residents. From accommodation to tailored pathways out of homelessness, she gained insight into the breadth of our work.
“It was so interesting for me to see how the centre has moved on from the Nightshelter days to The Beacon,” said Sue. “I was so impressed with all the work to support and encourage individuals to rebuild their lives and escape homelessness for good. It was good to see the accommodation—a safe place to stay—but far more to have an insight into the practical and emotional support the team provides.”
We’re incredibly grateful for Sue’s visit and her longstanding connection to our charity. Her support highlights the importance of local engagement in tackling homelessness—together, we can make a lasting difference.
