There are a number of stages involved in becoming a volunteer at The Winchester Beacon. This is to give you the opportunity to thoroughly explore what is involved and for us to be confident that you are right for the role.

Step 1: Explore more about the different volunteering opportunities

We recommend that you begin by reading up about the volunteering opportunities at The Winchester Beacon so that you understand a bit more about the different ways that you can give your time.

Step 2: Request an application form

Email our Volunteers Administrator, Nicci, at nicci@winchesterbeacon.org.uk to request an application form.

Step 3: Attend an interview

Once your application form has been processed, you will be invited to attend an interview. This will be an opportunity for you to look around The Winchester Beacon and understand more about the roles available and the ways that our volunteers contribute to what we do.

Step 4: References

The next stage after a successful interview is for us to contact two people you nominate to provide references. For safeguarding reasons, it is important that we feel confident that our volunteers are the right people to be supporting the vulnerable people that we work with.

Step 5: DBS check

All our volunteers are required to undertake a DBS check. You will be sent a link via email which will require you completing your details and providing The Winchester Beacon with the relevant evidence.

Step 5: Taster session

You will have an opportunity to come and try out being a volunteer. Another volunteer or a member of staff will work alongside you to give more insight into what is involved in volunteering at The Winchester Beacon.

Step 6: Training

You will attend a training session focusing on safeguarding, confidentiality and boundaries. This is to ensure you feel confident and prepared for your role as a volunteer. It is also a great opportunity to meet other volunteers.

Step 7: Log on and book your shifts

You should now be ready to access our online rota and begin your journey as a volunteer at The Winchester Beacon. On the rota you will be able to book on to help at specific shifts depending on your availability.

“The breadth of people you get to know at The Beacon – both residents and volunteers – is incredible” – August, Volunteer.
