1. What is The Winchester Beacon?
The Winchester Beacon is a local homelessness charity dedicated to providing safe accommodation, support services and pathways to independent living for people experiencing homelessness in the Winchester area.
2. Who can access support from The Winchester Beacon?
Our services are available to adults (18+) experiencing homelessness in Winchester and the surrounding areas. We work with individuals in need of emergency accommodation, housing support and guidance to help them to rebuild their lives.
3. How do I refer someone for support?
If you or someone you know needs support, referrals can be made through local agencies and council services. You can also contact us directly to discuss self-referral. Find out more here.
4. What services does The Winchester Beacon provide?
We offer a range of services, including:
- Short-term accommodation and one-to-one personalised support
- Housing and resettlement support
- Practical assistance with food, clothing and essentials
- Employment and skills training opportunities
- Mental health and wellbeing support
5. Will I have to share a bedroom?
No, each resident stays in a single bedroom of their own. They also have access to their own bathroom. Residents are also able to access the communal lounge and dining room.
6. Do I have to pay to stay at The Winchester Beacon?
Residents pay rent and a service charge. Your Beacon Support Worker will help you to get your finances in order and ensure you are in receipt of the right benefits to support your payments.
7. Are meals provided at The Winchester Beacon?
Residents are able to help themselves to breakfast and lunch. Every evening one of our volunteers comes in to cook and serve a homemade meal to our residents at our main site on Jewry Street.
8. Can pets stay at The Winchester Beacon?
Animals and pets are unable to stay at The Winchester Beacon due to health, safety and insurance issues.
9. How long can I stay at The Winchester Beacon?
Whilst you are staying with us we will ask you to engage in support from our experienced staff. They will work with you to plan for your future and help you to rebuild your life. Depending on your circumstances and the housing available, finding longer term accommodation could take weeks or months. Our average stay is currently 146 days.
10. Is The Winchester Beacon a safe place to stay?
We want The Winchester Beacon to be a safe and secure place for all those who live, work and volunteer here. All residents sign our House Agreement and are expected to follow our rules around drugs and alcohol. We offer support for residents coping with substance misuse issues but no alcohol, illegal drugs or NPSs (new psychoactive substances) are allowed to come on site. We have a duty of care to promote wellbeing, reduce harm and ensure the safety of all our residents, volunteers and staff members.
